What are language options on the platform?
Understand how language settings shape the user experience and make your platform accessible to multilingual communities.
Your platform can support multiple languages. You control:
The default platform language shown to first-time visitors.
The languages users can choose to interact with.
Whether content is translated manually or through automatic translation tools.
Supporting multiple languages helps you engage a broader audience, improve inclusivity, and increase participation.
What is weglot?
Weglot is an add-on that auto-translates everything on your platform’s interface.
A language switcher appears in the bottom-right of the screen.
Weglot translates all visible content (UI, posts, project titles, etc.).
Supports up to 3 languages by default (extendable to 10 upon agreement).
Sharing Weglot-translated URLs:
To link directly to a specific language version, append ?lang=xx
to any URL.
Example:
https://yourplatform.com/projects/community/?lang=fr
Note:
The language must already be configured in Weglot for the link to work.
What is google translate?
Google translate is a lightweight translation of ideas, comments, and proposals without translating the full interface.
Google Translate covers:
Proposals: via a "Translate" box
Ideas and project input: also via "Translate" option
Comments: with a “See translation” toggle
Limitations:
Does not translate admin content or project descriptions.
Assumes the user writes in their chosen default language — it won't detect and translate mismatched input.
Does not support automatic translation of user profile language mismatches.
To fix incorrect or incomplete translations:
Manually go to Edit Idea.
Use the language toggle to enter your own version in other languages.
How to enable auto translations?
Contact support via the chat bubble on your platform.
Access depends on your subscription plan.
There are two options:
Weglot: Translates the entire frontend UI and user-generated content.
Google Translate: Translates only ideas and comments.
How to change the default language?
Go to Settings > General > Languages.
Make sure your preferred default language appears on the far left of the language boxes.
To adjust, drag or delete other languages until the correct one is in the first position.
The default language determines the first impression visitors receive, and the base language used for account registration.
How to add a new language?
Go to Settings > General > Languages.
Click the dropdown arrow to view the full list of available languages.
Select the languages you want to add.
Important note: maintaining extra languages
Adding a language does NOT auto-translate content, multiple languages need to be maintained manually
When publishing a project: You must enter a translated title for each added language (required to publish). Descriptions can be added per language but are not required to publish, though strongly recommended.
You cannot hide a project in specific languages. All added platform languages will show the project, even if translations are missing.
What are user language preferences?
Each user controls their own platform language preference.
The language a user registers with becomes their default platform language.
Users can change their preferred language anytime via Account Settings > Profile > Language.
This preference affects the UI and how auto-translation is applied to ideas/comments.
